I can’t tell you how many New Year Eves I have played “Auld Lang Syne” in all kinds of places, from clubs to parties to….
The words are kind of strange, since it was written by Robert Burns who was from Scotland back in 1788. So we have a combination of it being over 200 years old – and language changes faster than we realize – and the fact that folks in Scotland have some words we don’t use much in the US and pronounce some words we do use differently than we do.
The rough translation of “Auld Lang Syne” is “for the sake of old times” (see Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne)
Be that as it may, our concern here is to learn to play it on the piano in a manner which is more interesting than just using the 3 basic chords with which it was written. Watch this short video for some ideas:
