There are thousands of chords that can be used in a song, and of course thousands of musical forms and melodies and rhythms which can be combined to create music – that’s why we can enjoy literally millions of peices of music in all styles from Baroque to Brubeck to Brahms to the Beattles to the latest rock or jazz or country-western or gospel song.
Here is a song made out of just 4 chords: Am, G, F, and E7. You’ll notice that they form a descending pattern from A to E. By breaking up the notes of the chords in some arpeggiated form, we can create a beautiful song out of just those four simple chords:
