Deceptive Cadences – What The Heck Are They?
Deceptive Cadences
Cadences are simply chord progressions that end with a pause, or just end. A plagal cadence (also known as an Amen cadence) moves from the IV chord to the I chord. An authentic cadence moves from the V chord to the I chord. A complete cadence moves from the IV to the V to the I. But a deceptive cadence is like a curve ball in baseball – it tries to fool the hitter – and in music it surprises the listener by moving from one chord to a chord that the listener doesn’t expect.
