| Good morning, this is Duane. Yesterday we took up the 3Â most used chords in any given key. I’d just like to take a few minutes today to review that, and to make sure that you’ve got a real good handle on it. If you didn’t see that, just type into the YouTube search engine, “the three most important chords”, and you’ll find it quickly. In lesson one, we learned that out of all the chords that are possible, only three are absolutely necessary to know. Of course, we want to learn as many as possible, but if we were limited to just three, they would be what? That’s right. The I chord, the IV chord, and the V chord. Those are the three most used chords in any given key. For example, if you were in the key of C, the I chord would be C chord, because it’s based on the first degree of the scale. The IV chord would be C-D-E-F, it would be the fourth degree of the scale. Build a chord on F, right? The IV chord is F. What would be the V chord in the key of C? One, two, three, four, five up from C: C-D-E-F-G. The V chord in the key of C would be G.

| By the way, we use roman numerals as symbols for those chords. Roman numeral I, roman numeral IV, roman numeral V. Let’s take another key. Let’s take the key of G. What would the I chord be in the key of G? Well, the answer’s real simple. Any time you’re in the key of anything, the I chord is the name of that key. The I chord in the key of G is what? G. What’s the IV chord? Well, we climb up four notes up the G scale. G-A-B-C. The IV chord is the C chord. What’s the V chord in the key of G? We count up five notes up the scale of G. G-A-B-C-D. The V chord is the D chord.

| I strongly suggest that you quiz yourself on all 12 keys just to make sure you understand the concept. Not that you have to play in all 12 keys, but you should understand that principle really, really well.
