Learn piano for the joy of it!
Years ago when I was in college I came across a book in the school library by Leonard Bernstein titled “The Joy Of Music” in which Bernstein has a conversation between himself and several imaginary people about various aspects of music, including Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
I was entralled – party because I admired Bernstein as a composer and conductor of the New York Philharmonic, and partly because of the exciting ideas and emotions that flow out of great music.
After many years as a piano teacher I now urge students to learn piano for the joy of it – not because you want to impress your friends, not because you want to play at the local club, and not because you want to make money from your talent. All these reasons are OK, but the real reason you should want to play piano is simply for the joy of being able to create music from scratch and out of that music express yourself and your emotions.
Here is a short video that demonstrates some of the things you can do on the piano – all from the same song!
You can also watch this on my YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC2EzEvobtw
If you do, be sure to subscribe to my channel while you’re there so you will be notified of any new videos I make – thanks!
Incidentally, I have a full course on 101 things you can do to a song to make it sound different, like you saw in this short 10-minute video, except the course is two hours long! Click here: www.PianoPlaying.com
