It is interesting that Chopin thought of the C scale as the most difficult to play – not the easiest – because of the lack of black keys. We have 3 long fingers, and so the C scale is awkward – the easiest scale to play is the B scale, as it fits our fingers much better. I sometimes wonder if we should teach that scale first, and save the C scale for later – it might reduce the fear that many students have of dealing with the black keys. Chopin might have been on to something!
