Left Hand Piano Patterns Made Of Broken Chords You Can Use
It is one thing to know chords, but it is another thing altogether to know what to do with them.
When I took piano lessons as a kid, my piano teachers taught me to read the music set before me, and that was about all. I learned to read music and sight read, and for that I am very thankful, but I didn’t begin to bloom as a piano player until the day I discovered chords. And back then I didn’t have a clue about left hand piano patterns and how they are formed from broken chords.
I remember it well. I had an opportunity to join the school combo at my high school when I was a freshman. The piano player who had played with the group previously had just graduated, and I was the only one who was a half-way decent piano player, so even though I was a freshman, the head of the group asked me to join.
I was thrilled, of course, but also scared to death – playing with guys who were older than I was and a whole lot more mature. They knew the songs the combo played and I didn’t. They handed me a fake book and told me to learn the chords in the songs they were going to play.
I didn’t know anything about chords at that point, even though I had taken piano lessons for about 8 years (from 6 years old to 14). So I bought a chord chart I saw advertised and started learning. The first two chord I learned were Cmaj7 and Dm7 and I loved the sound of them. Then I learned that the most used chords in any key are the I, IV, and V chords – the sax player in the group taught me that – and I was hooked. As a matter of fact, I’m still hooked. I love chords and the many things you can do with them.
