Playing “Auld Lang Syne” On The Piano

I can’t tell you how many New Year Eves I have played “Auld Lang Syne” in all kinds of places, from clubs to parties to….

The words are kind of strange, since it was written by Robert Burns who was from Scotland back in 1788. So we have a combination of it being over 200 years old – and language changes faster than we realize – and the fact that folks in Scotland have some words we don’t use much in the US and pronounce some words we do use differently than we do.

The rough translation of “Auld Lang Syne” is “for the sake of old times” (see Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne)

Be that as it may, our concern here is to learn to play it on the piano in a manner which is more interesting than just using the 3 basic chords with which it was written. Watch this short video for some ideas:

Knowing piano chords can be the difference between playing the piano just by reading the notes in a piece of sheet music and being able to improvise your own arrangements of most any song.

Piano chords

The mistake most people make is to try to take “too big a bite” when they are learning chords. The key is to take it slowly and really master each type of chord as you go along, because knowledge builds on knowledge in any field.

Here are links to tutorials on most of the chord types you will need to learn, such as major chords, minor chords, diminished, augmented, 6th and 7th chords.

Major chords: http://www.playpiano.com/101-tips/3-major-chords.htm

Minor chords: http://www.playpiano.com/101-tips/4-minor-chords.htm

Augmented chords: http://www.playpiano.com/101-tips/7-augmented.htm

Diminished chords: http://www.playpiano.com/101-tips/6-diminished.htm

Inversions of piano chords: http://www.playpiano.com/101-tips/5-inversions.htm

6th chords: http://www.playpiano.com/101-tips/8-major-6-chords.htm

7th chords: http://www.playpiano.com/101-tips/10-7th-chords.htm

Of course there are also minor 6th chords, minor 7th chords, plus 9th, 11th, 13th, suspensions, alterations, and so on, but we will cover those in some later post.

This beautiful carol was written in about 1868 by Phillip Brooks after he had visited Bethlehem. Today Bethlehem is anything but peaceful, but the words are classic and eternal and remind us that there will be a time when peace will come to all the world when Emmanuel (which means “God with us”) rules:

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight

For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel
