"Playing & Arranging " Alexander's Ragtime Band" on the piano - by Irving Berlin

"Alexander's Ragtime Band" is still one of Berlin's best-known pieces, despite rumors  that Berlin had "stolen" the song from an African-American composer, perhaps even from Scott Joplin. Within a short time after "Alexander's Ragtime Band" was published, Berlin's further compositions demonstrated that he had no need to plagiarize.

You get the song sheet plus Duane's piano instruction for arranging it on the DVD (so you can see all the techniques up close for yourself) for just $47.

"Playing & Arranging The " St. Louis Blues"
by W.C. Handy On The Piano

Undoubtedly the most long lived and popular blues song ever written is William Christopher Handy's immortal classic, "St. Louis Blues," which has almost taken on a life of it's own since it was written over eighty years ago. It has been played and enjoyed the world over. According to Handy, he found his inspiration for the song while wandering the streets of St. Louis. One afternoon he met a black woman tormented by her husband's absence. She told Handy: " Ma man's got a heart like a rock cast in de sea. " Handy, forty years old at the time, drew his inspiration for many of his songs from African-American words and music, so it is not surprising that he began to compose the theme to this woman's anguish. He later said his aim was "to combine ragtime syncopation with a real melody in the spiritual tradition."

In this course we try to get the underlying feeling of the blues so you can apply what you learn here to other blues songs.

"Piano Runs Galore!"

How would you like to be able to use at least 46 different kinds of piano runs? And not just runs, but also fillers, tricks, special effects, riffs and embellishments of all kinds?

That's exactly what this fantastic 6-CD course teaches -- runs that you only DREAMED of in the past -- runs you've heard on tapes or CD's, TV, and radio -- runs you didn't know how to do, but wanted to.

Picture yourself playing those LIGHTNING FAST runs up the keyboard and back down in time for the next chord, or playing CASCADING RUNS down the keyboard for a WATERFALL of wonderful sounds! Plus you'll learn mordents, inverted mordents, trills, turns, tremolos, grace notes, glissandos, fillers galore, cocktail-piano runs, plus gospel-style runs as well as "blues runs" based on the blues scale! You get each run on paper and on the audio CD, so you can both SEE and HEAR exactly how to play each run!

Here are the 6 CD's that make up the course:

1. "Cocktail" Runs  --The lightning fast runs used by the great "show" pianists. One hand runs, two hand runs, open-octave runs, tremolo-blasted runs, and more.

2. Embellishments Galore  -- Mordents, inverted mordents, trills, turns, tremolos, grace notes, glissandos, etc.

3. Piano Tricks -- How do you make your piano sound oriental? How do you make it sound like a drum? How about a music box? A bell? Latin? Country? You'll learn it all on this tape.

4. Evangelistic Runs -- These are the octave runs and fillers used by the great gospel pianists of past and present.

5. Jazz & Blues Runs -- You will learn the "blues scale" and how to run it up and down the keyboard. You'll also learn blue note-crunches, slides, etc.

6.  Fillers Galore -- You'll learn how to fill up an empty measure with a counter-melody; how to create an intro; an ending; how to make a "turnaround", plus fillers of all kinds.

All these 6 CD's come with Summary Sheets in a big binder. You'll love it! bullet2.gif (601 bytes)

(Piano Tabs)"

Most professional musicians play from a book called a "Fake Book". I bought my first fake book containing only about 200 songs when I was a teenager -- they were illegal then, but most musicians owned them -- for $50. That would be equal to $500. or more now. But fortunately, they have since become legal, so you can buy a real good one with 1000 songs now for $50. or less. A fake book contains just the melody (tune) and the chord symbols of a song, so you have to know chords to use one. But when you do, your playing comes alive -- you're only reading a few notes, but playing lots of notes.

I really want you to have this course because it shows you exactly, step by step, how to make your piano playing fuller and much more exciting and interesting by reading just the single melody line and adding all the exciting stuff using the chord symbols (Gm7, Eb9, C-9, F13, etc.). (Lots of people also call them "piano tabs" -- borrowed from the world of guitar tabs) If you've ever heard a professional pianist play all over the keyboard, and then notice that the music he or she is playing from is nothing more than the melody line and chord symbols, then you have witnessed a fake book in action!

Once you learn this skill you'll be reading only a few notes per measure, but playing handfuls of notes -- arpeggios, chords, runs, riffs, fills, etc. All I can say about this course is "Get it!" It comes with a booklet of lead sheets (just like a fake book, but with less songs) and a chord chart, in case you're rusty on your chords.

Dear Friend:

I have isolated 33 prime characteristics -- 33 key elements of piano playing, and put them all in one place in a course titled

" 33 Tips For Becoming a Great Pianist!"

You'll get 33 cards that summarize each of the 33 tips -- and on the 4 audio CD's that come with the course you'll hear me explain and demonstrate each of those 33 key elements.

For example, you'll learn when you should look down at your hands,

and when you shouldn't,

and how to keep from losing your place when you do.

You'll learn the secret of pedaling, and how to make your playing smooth when you want it to be, and explosive when you want it to be. You'll learn the logic of fingering -- whey it's so easy once you understand the principle. You'll learn the 7 secrets of sight reading fast. You'll learn how to train yourself to hear intervals of all kinds, from 2nds to 13ths. You'll learn to recognize chords, and extend them, and substitute them, and how to turn them into various styles by breaking them up in certain ways.

You'll learn to voice chords in open and closed voicings and how to add color tones.

You'll learn how to harmonize and analyze and stylize....and tons more.

Here are some of the 33 Tips:

  • Hand & Body Position -- Eye Flips --Spaced Repetition -- Pedaling -- Dynamics -- Ear Training -- Intervals from 2nds to 13th --Fingering..which do you use when? -- Arranging -- The 7 Fundamentals of Sight Reading -- Key Orientation -- Pre-Reading the Score -- Mental Practice -- Repertoire -- Goal Setting -- Rhythm awareness...samba, fox trot, etc. -- "Idea Stealing" -- 12-Bar Blues -- Extended chords 6th through 13th -- Technique Acquisition -- Harmonization -- Key Identification -- Voicing -- Improvisation -- Harmony & Theory -- Analysis -- Runs & Fills -- Cross-Polination

The "Play Like You've Always Wanted To!" course -- a 2-hour video course in

"Playing By Ear Using Chords!"-- using only a "fake book".

(A fake book is what the pros use -- each song is shown using the melody and chord symbols (piano tabs) only).

In just two hours you'll learn:

--Why almost anybody can "play by ear" -- if they know & understand the "family of chords" -- the "fam", the "cousins", the "friends of the fam", the "strangers", and their patterns!

--How to scan the parameters of the tune so you don't have to keep looking at it all the time.

--How to voice the chords you already know by splitting them between two hands...

--How to combine your knowledge of chords with your ear to maximize your playing.

--How to put a "front door" and a "back door" on a song for a professional approach (intros and endings)...

--How to create fills that reflect the theme of the song -- not just random fills with no meaning...

--How to use the best of the blues, the best of gospel, the best of pop...to add color and interest to each song.

(PS: If you don't read music, be sure and order DVD-12 "7 Magic Steps To Speed Sight Reading" along with this course, as this course assumes you know how to read music to some degree -- at least be able to read the right hand melody line. It also assumes you know chords -- all the major, minor, augmented, diminished, 6th, 7th, mag7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, altered, slash, & sus chords. If you don't know chords -- order WW-1 "All The Chords In The Whole Wide World" along with this course.)

"How To Think In The Key

You're Playing In"

To speak Spanish or German or French well, you have to be able to "think" in the language. It's the same with music...unless you can "think in Bb" when you're playing a song in the key of Bb, you will leave out flats, miss chords, etc. that are just not necessary to miss.

Since there are 12 keys you can play in, I've come up with a set of six cassette tapes which cover those 12 keys:

  • CD 1: Track One: How to Think in the Key of C.

Track Two: How to Think in the Key of D flat.

  • CD 2: Track One: How To Think in the Key of D.

Track Two: How to Think in the Key of E flat.

  • CD 3: Track One: How to Think in the Key of E.

Track Two: How to Think in the Key of F.

  • CD 4: Track One: How to Think in the Key of G flat.

Track Two: How to Think in the Key of G.

  • CD 5: Track One: How To Think in the Key of A flat.

Track Two: How to Think in the Key of A.

  • CD 6: Track One: How to Think in the Key of B flat.

Track Two: How to Think in the Key of B.

I could have titled these tapes "EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE KEY OF __________, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK YOUR MUSIC TEACHER",

because on each tape I drill you intensely on the key, so by the time it's over you'll know:

.....what each scale degree is

.....what the primary chords are

.....what the secondary chords are

.....what the fingering for the scale of that key is

.....what the relative minor key is

.....patterns that work particularly well in that key.

With each CD you'll get a sheet titled

"GETTING TO KNOW THE KEY OF_______"

On it there is a picture of each key. As you listen to each CD, I'll ask you to write down on that sheet the things you learn about that particular key. That way, you will get acquainted with each key in a way you never thought possible. Just like each person is an individual with dimples, or long eyelashes, or a hitch in their get-along, so each key has its own "dimples" --things you'll learn to love about that particular key.
